Types of Apprenticeships

Most apprentices follow a Traditional Apprenticeship (TA), which combines college with learning on site.

Traditional Apprenticeships

A traditional apprenticeship combines study at college with experience on-site over a 2-3 year period (or 4 years in Scotland). This is the most common way to get qualified and is available across the UK.

As part of your apprenticeship, you will achieve an NVQ or SVQ qualification, which you can use to qualify for one of the industry card schemes – essential for getting on site.

Your employer may also be able to claim CITB-ConstructionSkills Grant of up to £9,000 to support you through a 3 year apprenticeship.

Specialist Apprenticeships

ConstructionSkills’ specialist apprenticeships have been designed in conjunction with trade associations and independent training groups in order to serve those sectors and employers that cannot access specialist apprenticeships through local colleges or training providers.

The nature of the specialists’ work often necessitates a flexible arrangement for learning. With this in mind, Specialist Apprentice Programmes (SAPs) allow apprentices to learn mostly while on the job.  A structured learning delivery builds capability to ensure competence is accrued to gain a construction industry recognised N/SVQ qualification.

Access to the programme is open to learners of all ages and, where in scope and eligible, the apprenticeships attract a CITB–ConstructionSkills grant. Typically the duration of the specialist apprenticeships is 24 months with content delivered by industry experts and supported by CITB-ConstructionSkills’ own staff.

CITB-ConstructionSkills currently offers a range of occupations as detailed below. However, if you require a specialist apprenticeship that is not covered already please contact us on enquiry.nsac@cskills.org or telephone 0300 456 5561 or 0300 456 5557
