Who is it for?

This scheme is for you if you require proof of training and assessment under the Electricity at Work Regulations, indicating that you have demonstrated you can work in a safe manner. It covers essential electrics for those who service, repair, fault find and install replacement electrical components involving:

  • central heating controls
  • combination boilers
  • refrigeration systems.

There are six categories:

Essential electrics

It is essential this category is completed in advance of any of the other categories. It covers:

  • safe isolation of an electrical circuit
  • safe isolation of a fused spur/isolator
  • electrical bonding
  • electrical concepts.

Central heating controls fault finding

Shows you how to adopt a systematic fault finding approach to central heating systems and their controls. It covers:

  • electrical connection of a boiler
  • trace and repair electrical faults
  • exchange electrical components.

Basic refrigeration system electrics

Shows you how to carry out the installation of compressors and basic refrigeration system controls and their wiring from the electrical circuit supply point. It covers:

  • electrical connection of a refrigeration system
  • trace and repair electrical faults
  • exchange electrical components.

How to get a certificate/card

Training and assessment will be based upon safe work, installation, commissioning, fault diagnostics and exchange of electrically operated equipment and components. All cards are valid for five years and can be renewed at any approved Cskills Awards Centre. You will be notified by Cskills Awards six months prior to the expiry of any categories.

There are two entry categories based upon knowledge and experience:

Category 1 
You need to have a recognised qualifications and/or experience from the following industry sectors:

  • Electrical
  • Gas
  • Plumbing
  • Refrigeration

Category 2 
You need to have relevant allied trade experience, such as:

  • Plumbing
  • Heating and ventilating
  • Gas
  • Refrigeration

Why have one?

If you are working with electrics in the gas, water and oil industries being qualified and a card holder:

  • provides evidence of holding an Essential Electrics certificate of achievement (this can be used onsite for employers/clients)
  • meets the requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations

Information for existing ‘Essential Electrics’ cardholders

If you hold a current registration in one area for example, Central Heating Controls Fault Finding and wish to extend the range of work you do to another for example, Combination Boiler Basic Fault Finding, apply to your nearest centre and undertake the appropriate assessment.
