In the past you would normally have organised the various stages of the qualification process yourself. However, if you are applying for a CSCS card, we recommend that you take advantage of the new SkillsDirect service, where everything is organised for you.
Step 1 - Health and Safety Test
You must have passed the CITB-ConstructionSkills Health and Safety Test in the past two years. Visit the Health and Safety Test section to learn more about the test and how to book.
Step 2 - Proof of practical competence
This normally requires you to get an S/NVQ, although this may depend on your scheme. Some schemes may also require you to carry out training or assessment specific to the trades they cover. To find out more about entry requirements, check the list of card schemes.
You can get an S/NVQ through either On-Site Assessment and Training (OSAT) or Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA).
OSAT lets you get a card whilst you are working on site during normal working days, and takes about six months to complete.
EWPA is a fast route available to certain trades for workers with at least five years’ experience who don’t need any further training. You’ll spend one day having your skills and knowledge assessed and typically achieve the NVQ within a few weeks.
Step 3 – Card Application
Having met all the requirements of your scheme, you’ll then need to apply for the card. Find out how to apply for different schemes.
Still need help?
If you’re not sure where to start, our Qualifications Advisor will ask you some easy questions and then tell you which card you need and the best way to get it.
