Lead by example - helping site supervisors set the health and safety standard demanded on UKCG sites

The National Construction College, the training division of ConstructionSkills, has two courses which can help site supervisors set the health and safety standard demanded on UK Construction Group (UKCG) sites.

The UKCG, the leading trade body for the UK construction industry, has issued a new training standard for supervisors on its sites from 1 January 2010.

The standard ensures that supervisors working on UKCG sites can demonstrate that they have the necessary knowledge and skills to supervise their workers effectively – it is essential if supervisors are to ensure their workers carry out their tasks with a high regard for health and safety.

Supervisors set an example of best practice. If they are lax on health and safety, others will be. On the other hand, if they set a high standard day in and day out those working with them will follow.

After all, efficient supervisors, mean efficient workers and sites, with projects delivered on time and in budget.

Supervising Behavioural Practice and Site Supervisors’ Safety Training Scheme are two courses that will help supervisors take the lead and meet the new training standard issued by UKCG, which is the new requirement for all supervisors working on UKCG construction sites. Delivered by the National Construction College, supervisors can be sure that courses will be clear, interesting and informative.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) have approved both courses and worked with the National Construction College to develop Supervising Behavioural Practice. ODA supports the new UKCG training standard for site supervisors.

Through achievement of part one Site Supervisors’ Safety Training Scheme and part two Supervising Behavioural Practice, the new UKCG training standard will be met. The National Construction College can deliver both courses on site, at your venue or by utilising one of over 60 National Construction College facilities.

Remember, this isn’t just another set of health and safety courses it is about helping to instil an ongoing culture of safe working on site, through team work. Don’t forget, a supervisor cannot work on any UKCG construction site without meeting the new UKCG training standard.
