The INSPIRE Scholarship Scheme was developed by ConstructionSkills as a result of feedback from the industry where a worrying two thirds of companies reported serious problems in recruiting sufficiently skilled and experienced ‘work ready’ staff.

The concept of the INSPIRE Scholarship Scheme is to match motivated students, who are preparing to apply for Construction & Built Environment courses at university, with employers who realise the benefits of engaging with new recruits at this stage. INSPIRE is conducive to run parallel to graduate schemes already in place.

Students apply online (November – March) via bconstructive.co.uk to become an Inspire scholar. Their applications are rated and subsequently matched with a suitable sponsoring employer. When registering, employers are asked to list the main criteria they are looking for in a potential graduate. Using the set criteria employers are then matched with suitable candidates by ConstructionSkills and are sent the relevant application forms (May –June) for them to select who they wish to interview and whom they would like to offer a scholarship.

Post selection you will be asked to agree a financial sponsorship figure between £750 - £1500 per annum, which is also match funded by ConstructionSkills. Over the three year degree period, students receive up to £9000 to help them through their studies. In addition they will be available for a minimum of 10 weeks work experience during the summer of their first year – this is an INSPIRE benefit and companies can of course make additional arrangements with their scholar(s).

Companies that are ConstructionSkills registered can also claim the A19 work experience grant for each placement offered.
