Built-Up Felt Roofing

Who’s the course for?

People who would like to follow a career in built-up felt roofing. Applicants will need to have a good head for heights and enjoy working outdoors, whatever the weather. Built-up felt roofers need to be able to cope with figures, so that they can calculate areas and volumes.

Course aims and benefits

The Built-up Felt Roofing course has been designed in close consultation with the roofing industry and is offered as part of the Apprenticeship programme.

It provides training and assessment in bitumen, roofing felts, surfacing and insulation materials, tools and equipment, regulations and standards together with the practical and theoretical knowledge required to achieve the built-up felt roofing framework.

  • Preparing background surfaces
  • Preparing materials and components
  • Storing resources ready for use
  • Providing setting out for applied waterproof membranes
  • Repairing surface defects
  • Applying materials to the structural fabric
  • Roll and pour techniques
  • Torch-on techniques
  • Establishing the suitability of the work area and access equipment (roofing occupations)
  • Contributing to efficient working practices
  • Abrasive wheels

Entry requirements

All candidates will be required to complete a Skills Learning exercise, and some will need to attend the college for further tests.

Methods of assessment

All knowledge and understanding assessments will be carried out during attendance at the college. Arrangements will be made to assess apprentices in the workplace during on-site periods. Guidance in portfolio collation and assessments for an S/NVQ Level 2 qualification will be discussed with the employer and apprentice.

Where and when

This apprenticeship is available through the following campuses:
NNC Midlands (Birmingham)

NNC South (Erith)

NNC Scotland (Glasgow)

Year 1: 5 x 3-week blocks
Year 2: 2 x 3-week blocks and 1 x 2-week block

The remaining part of the programme is spent on-site with the apprentice’s employer to gain work experience.
