Who’s the course for?

People who wish to start a career in the scaffolding industry and are motivated to work hard to become valuable members of the construction workforce. Apprentices should have a good head for heights, and have a highly developed sense of responsibility.

Course aims and benefits

To provide training and assessment in the methods of erecting and dismantling both basic and complex scaffolds together with practical and theoretical knowledge to achieve the Scaffolding Scheme A framework.

This course is part of the Apprenticeships programme, is approved under the Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme (CISRS) and within the training, apprentices will undertake the necessary elements to qualify for a Scaffolders Card.

Block 1

Induction Programme

  • Mandatory subjects

  • Fire fighting
  • Safe use of ladders
  • Manual handling

Block 2

  • Part 1a: erecting and dismantling independent and putlog scaffolds using tube and fitting and system

Block 3

  • Part 1b: erecting and dismantling tower and birdcage scaffolds

Block 4

Part 2a, erecting and dismantling

  • Scaffolds with prefabricated beams
  • Roof scaffolds
  • Protective fans

Block 5

Part 2b, erecting and dismantling:

  • Pavement scaffolds
  • Truss out scaffolds
  • Loading bays

Block 6

  • Final assessment

Entry requirements

All candidates will be required to complete a Skills Learning exercise, and some will need to attend the college for further tests.

Qualification/Certification

  • Apprenticeship – Scaffolding, S/NVQ Level 2 – Access and Rigging Operations (Scaffolding Construction Technical certificate)
  • The Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme (CISRS) Scaffolders Registration Card
  • Key Skills – Level 1
  • First Aid Appointed Persons
  • Health and Safety test

Year 1: 1 x 2-week induction
1 x 2-week part 1a
1 x 2-week part 1b

Year 2: 1 x 2-week part 2a
1 x 2-week part 2b
1 x 1-week assessment

The remaining part of the programme is spent on-site with the apprentice’s employer to gain work experience.
