The Life Long Learning map reflects each course included within the Scheme and the levels of responsibility within the industry, giving individuals a clear picture of the level of knowledge required for the role they fulfil now and in the future.

The courses are as follows:

Health & Safety Awareness (one-day)

This course is aimed at individuals who are about to work, or have just begun work within the industry. The course provides a practical summary of health, safety, welfare and environmental issues, helping the individual to understand potential hazards they may face on site, and identifying the individual’s responsibility for looking after themselves and others.

This course is an essential foundation for those wishing to obtain an industry accreditation card and a natural progression from this course would be to attend the Site Supervisor’s Safety Training Scheme or a Supervisor Specialist Skills course.

Health & Safety Awareness Syllabus

Achieving Behavioural Change (ABC) (one-day)

This one-day course is designed to provide delegates with an understanding of how attitude and behaviour can affect the chances of accidents occurring.

For this course to be successful it is important that all attendees come from all levels within an organisation i.e. Managers, Supervisors and Operatives.

The Site Supervisor’s Safety Training Scheme (two-day)

This course is aimed at first line managers, foreman, gangers, team leaders, supervisors and those who have, or are about to acquire supervisory responsibilities. It provides an introduction to health, and safety, welfare and environmental issues, and legal responsibilities relevant to their work. The course gives attendees valuable assistance in safely managing a construction site.

This course prepares individuals for the SMSTS and/or the Supervisor Specialist Skills course.

The Site Supervisor’s Safety Training Scheme Syllabus

Site Safety for Shopfitters and Interior Contractors (three-day)

This course is for site managers, supervisors, foremen and those who have or are about to be, responsible for overseeing site operations involving groups of staff and workforce within the shopfitting and interior contracting industry. The course will also help individuals responsible for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling and administering a workforce in this specialist sector to develop a better understanding of the legal, moral and social responsibilities of their role and to supervise health and safety on-site in accordance with current legal provisions.

ConstructionSkills has worked in conjunction with the National Association of Shopfitters to develop this course which meets the very specific requirements of this sector.

Site Safety for Shopfitters and Interior Contractors syllabus

Site Management Safety Training Scheme Course (five-day)

This course is designed for site managers, agents and persons who are responsible for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling and administering a workforce.

The course covers all relevant legislation and other aspects which affect safe working in the building, construction, and civil engineering industries. The course focuses on the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of necessary control measures and adequate communication to sustain a safe practice in the workplace.

Site Management Safety Training Scheme Course Syllabus

Site Management Safety Training Scheme Refresher Course (two-day)

SMSTS certificate holders will need to renew their certificate and the refresher course aims to bring individuals health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving a thorough overview of legislation changes and their impact in the workplace. The course includes a wide range of topics many building on the previous five-day course programme as well as introducing new subjects.

Plant Managers Safety Training Scheme (five-day)

This course is designed to help plant managers, instructors, agents and supervisors to manage health and safety on site in accordance with legal provisions, and within the context of their management or supervisory roles. This course will help develop an understanding of responsibilities and accountability for site health, safety and welfare and recognise a safe site, training area, workshop area that is efficient, economical and productive.

Plant Managers Safety Training Refresher Scheme (two-day)

This course is designed for delegates who have previously passed the full five-day PMSTS course. It aims to bring their health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving a thorough overview of legislative changes and their impact in the workplace. The course includes a wide range of topics, some building on those contained within the five-day course programme and others introducing new subjects.

Plant Managers Safety Training Scheme Refresher Course Syllabus

Site Sustainability Simplified (two-day)

This two-day course is intended for those who have management responsibilities on a construction site. It targets site supervisors, site managers, assistant site managers, site agents and site foremen and provides a practical summary of sustainability and environmental issues. It enables delegates to understand and put into practice the principles of sustainable construction.
