SVQ Level 2 in Carpentry and Joinery
What encouraged you to join the construction industry?
I really wanted to learn a trade and have a hands-on job. I also wanted something that gave me variety and after doing a Carpentry taster day at school found that it ticked most of these boxes. So I went straight on from school to my apprenticeship.
What do you do day-to-day?
I do lots of different things, from working on new builds to restoration work. It's a fairly specialist trade and I enjoy being able to work on lots of different projects.
Good bits and bad bits about your job?
One of the best bits about my job is being able to say "I did that" when I've completed a job. I'm really proud when I see the results of my hard work. There aren't many bad bits, or none that stick out anyway.
What surprised you about the construction industry?
I was surprised by how H&S conscious everyone in the industry is as I didn't really think about everything that was involved beforehand.
If you were to recommend your job to someone else, what would you say?
Without a doubt I would recommend it, it's a good trade to get into and you can be safe in the knowledge that people will always need carpenters so I have real job security.
