Mastic Aspalter

The Job

Mastic asphalt is the material made from a mixture of limestone and bitumen. When it is heated up it can be spread and formed, returning to its original state as it cools down again. Not surprisingly, mastic asphalters are the workers who use this material in their daily work.

The People

You'll need to enjoy working outdoors, although some of the time you'll probably be undercover. It's also important to have good numeracy skills, as you'll be calculating the correct volumes of asphalt needed for a job.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific academic requirements to train as a mastic asphalter, although GCSE passes (D-G) / Standard Grades (4-7) in Maths, English and Technology will be helpful for the calculations, measurements and theory. You'll also have to enjoy working outside.

Apprenticeships are the usual route in and enable you to earn while you learn. Entry to an apprenticeship scheme will usually involve a selection test. As an apprentice, you will study towards NVQ/SVQ Level 2 and 3 in roofing, which you will need to complete before you can qualify.

The Institute of Roofing offers its own qualifications, and will be able to offer you help and advice on developing your skills within the industry.

The Benefits

The Building and Allied Trades Joint Industrial Council (BATJIC) agrees wage rates annually. Pay rates for apprentices in Scotland are set by SBATC. A good basic wage is available and can be boosted with the incentive schemes that many companies offer. With enough experience, many people move on to supervisory roles, or even set up on their own.
