Plant-hire controllers

The Job  

Plant-hire controllers are organisers. It is their job to ensure that plant equipment is in the right place at the right time, and they need to be on hand to sort out any emergencies that might occur.

The People  

As a Plant-hire controller you must be calm and well prepared. You'll need good organisational and negotiation skills, and be good at working in a team.

Entry Requirements  

There are no specific academic requirements needed to train as a plant-hire controller, although a good knowledge of the plant machinery is necessary. It is also recommended that applicants for this position have trained as plant operators previously.

By training as a plant operator, you will have learned the details behind the types of plant machinery suited to each job, and the way to deal with plant-sales people.

You are also likely to receive health and safety training.

The Benefits  

The Building and Allied Trades Joint Industrial Council (BATJIC) agrees wage rates annually. Pay rates for apprentices in Scotland are set by SBATC. A good basic wage is available and can be boosted with the incentive schemes that many companies offer.
