Steel Erector
The Job
Steel erectors install the prefabricated structural steel frames of buildings such as warehouses, industrial units and multi-storey buildings. Work can be on both new buildings and the extension or adaptation of existing buildings.
The People
There are roughly 6,800 steel erectors and riggers in the UK. Most work for steel erection companies as sub-contractors. They tend to work in groups made up of two steel erectors, a groundsperson and a crane driver, so good teamwork is essential.
Entry Requirements
There are no set entry requirements to train as a steel erector, although GCSE's /Standard Grades in Maths, English and Technology will be helpful for the calculations, measurements and theory.
Training is given by employers on-the-job, so you can learn whilst earning a wage through an apprenticeship. There is an NVQ/SVQ Level 2 offered by Lantra Awards in Fence and Steel Erection. They work closely with the highways industry and provide a Fencing Industry Skills Scheme (FISS). It encourages steel and fence erectors to develop skills and achieve high levels of competence.
The Benefits
The Building and Allied Trades Joint Industrial Council (BATJIC) agrees wage rates annually. A good basic wage is available and can be boosted with the incentive schemes that many companies offer.
There are also opportunities to progress on to supervisory roles, and some steel erectors set up their own business.
