Types of Apprenticeship

Roofing

Most apprentices follow a Traditional Apprenticeship (TA), which combines college with learning on site. If you live in England and have already studied construction at college, you may be eligible for a Programme-Led Apprenticeship (PLA). You can find out more about each type of apprenticeship below.

Traditional Apprenticeships

A traditional apprenticeship combines study at college with experience on-site over a 2-3 year period (or 4 years in Scotland). This is the most common way to get qualified and is available across the UK.

As part of your apprenticeship, you will achieve an NVQ or SVQ qualification, which you can use to qualify for one of the industry card schemes – essential for getting on site.

Your employer may also be able to claim CITB-ConstructionSkills Grant of up to £9,400 to support you through a 3 year apprenticeship.

Programme-Led Apprenticeships (PLAs)

If you live in England and have already completed an Intermediate Construction Award (ICA), the best way to study for your apprenticeship is as a Programme-Led Apprentice.

This enables you to turn your ICA into a full NVQ and apprenticeship framework through an employer placement lasting up to 12 months.

If you are already employed, you may be able to do this with your existing employer – who could claim up to £3,000 in employer support. Or, we may be able to help you find a suitable company.
